Birch Bark Extract
"The original aspirin, straight from the forest"
Birch Bark Extract
Betula alleghaniensis (Yellow Birch) and Betula lenta (Sweet Birch) โ American birch trees have been pharmacies in bark form for Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The inner bark of sweet birch contains methyl salicylate, the same compound that gives wintergreen its distinctive scent and flavor, and is chemically related to aspirin.
US Growing Region
Eastern North America from Quebec to Georgia. Yellow birch dominates in the Northeast and Great Lakes. Sweet birch is found primarily in the Appalachian region. USDA zones 3-7.
How Generations Have Used It
The Menominee, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi used birch bark tea for headaches, fever, and joint pain โ effectively using natural aspirin centuries before Bayer existed. The Cherokee used birch for colds and rheumatism. Birch bark was also a critical material for canoes, containers, and shelter.
Why It Works
Contains methyl salicylate, a natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory related to aspirin. Supports joint comfort and muscle recovery. Birch also contains betulin and betulinic acid, compounds studied for their antioxidant and immune-supporting properties.
Recommended Usage
Add 1-2 droppers full to water or tea. Can also be added to a warm bath for muscle relief. Use daily for joint support.
