Syzygium aromaticum โ cloves are the dried flower buds of an evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. While not native to North America, cloves have been one of the most valued spices in global trade for over 2,000 years and are a cornerstone of herbal medicine traditions worldwide, widely available and used across the US.

How Generations Have Used It
Cloves have been traded along the Silk Road since at least 200 BC. The Chinese Han dynasty required courtiers to hold cloves in their mouths when addressing the emperor to freshen breath. In traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, cloves treat digestive issues, dental pain, and respiratory infections. American settlers and frontier dentists used clove oil as the primary dental anesthetic.

Recommended Usage
For dental pain: bite gently on a whole clove near the affected tooth, or apply clove oil to the gum. For tea: steep 3-4 whole cloves in hot water for 10 minutes. Add to chai, mulled cider, or cooking.
