"The Appalachian antibiotic"
Goldenseal Root Powder
Hydrastis canadensis โ goldenseal is a low-growing woodland plant native to the rich forests of eastern North America. Named for its thick, bright yellow rhizome (underground stem), goldenseal is one of the most commercially valuable native medicinal plants in the US. It has been so heavily wildcrafted that it is now considered threatened in many states.
US Growing Region
Eastern United States, concentrated in the Appalachian region from Vermont to Georgia and west to Arkansas. Prefers rich, shady hardwood forests. USDA zones 3-8. Now primarily cultivated due to overharvesting.
How Generations Have Used It
The Cherokee used goldenseal for skin diseases, digestive problems, and as a wash for sore eyes. The Iroquois used it for whooping cough and liver conditions. It became a hugely popular remedy in the 1800s after herbalist Samuel Thomson promoted it. Today it is one of the top-selling herbal supplements in America.
Why It Works
Contains berberine, a powerful antimicrobial compound effective against bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Supports digestive health and has been shown to help with gut infections. Soothes mucous membranes โ used for sore throats and sinus infections. Anti-inflammatory properties.
Recommended Usage
Mix 1/2 teaspoon in warm water and drink as a bitter tea. For sore throat: gargle with goldenseal tea before swallowing. Can also be taken in capsule form. Not recommended for daily long-term use โ take in 2-week cycles.
